There is much debate about the idea of Technology in the classroom. Technology is an integral part of the lives of millions of people, including students. By incorporating technology into the curriculum, students are not only engaged but also learn how to use technology properly and safely.
The idea of technology integration is key. Integrated technology is not simply placing a smart device in the hands of young students. Integrating technology is so much more than providing the device. By incorporating technology into the curriculum, those devices can be vessels for the students to explore their world and dive deep into their curriculum.
By using not only the basic suite software such as Microsoft Word and Powerpoint but also more interactive technology such as Skype, virtual field trips, and QR codes, the classroom walls are truly opened up and the possibilities are endless. Technology opens so many doors for the students to gain insight into topics that can not possibly be covered in enough depth in the general classroom. Students can video conference someone in China via Skype and then be on a virtual field trip to a zoo in Antarctica in a matter of minutes. Technology breaks down the barriers that used to limit a teacher's curriculum and opens up a whole world of possibilities!
In order to break down the barriers in my classroom, I intend on using QR codes in various locations within my room. I think students could really benefit from and enjoy this type of technology. QR codes within the library could provide the students access to video book reviews from their peers that could give them more insight into the book to help them decide if it would be something they were interested in reading. I also think that adding QR codes to posters created by the students on various topics could link to a video that explains more in depth about their topic that they could not include on their poster.
I would also incorporate the use of the SMARTBoard technology in order to keep the students engaged and interested. SMARTBoard breaks down the teacher-student barrier and allows the students to become a part of teaching the lesson! Any chance I could have to use the SMARTBoard to teach a lesson, I plan to.
There are so many great pieces of technology and each adds a different aspect to the classroom dynamic. When used appropriately, I feel that each element of technology can really enrich a classroom learning experience. Every chance I get to incorporate technology and educate students about the benefits and proper use, I will use it!
